Pt 1 of 2, "Winter Sense" Backpacking in the Snow by Nutnfancy (Video) 42min

Cue the heavy snow. Now cue the wind. More wind, more snow. Now that's perfect. Time to take the scouts out on a backpacking trip in the snow. Welcome to "Winter Sense," a short but fairly hardcore snow adventure that gives an inside look on my work with a youth group. I have been doing this for years but this is the first time I've shown it within TNP. Launching from a beautiful, snow-driven location, Allie the Mountain Dog and myself head on up a with the boys and another adult leader to teach winter camping techniques to the boys. Hiking in for several miles towing the TNP gear sled, we bivouac in six feet of powder snow and set up camp. And don't believe the bravado from this group... they are total backcountry rookies! But the driving snow and plummeting temperatures are good attention getters when darkness falls. That motivation provides me with an attentive audience as I teach the realities of serious snow camping, fire craft, gear selection, shelter considerations, calorie expenditure, and survival priorities. I don't claim all expertise on survival knowledge but I've been using my methods for decades and they work and will keep you safe and comfortable. Come on along for another frigid and snow adventure. The media would like us to belive that Jared Lee Loughner went on his shooting spree for political reasons, but a recent CBS poll shows that most people aren't buying it. So what did motivate him? Was it mind control, the Devil, or just plain insanity?
As it turns out, he had not only had met Giffords before, but attended the same synagogue as her. That's right, he's Jewish! So much for being an anti-semite. It is possible, I would think, that Giffords knew him or at least knew who he was and was afraid of him. Maybe whoever runs her Youtube channel had subscribed to Loughner's channel in an attempt to be nice to him- or maybe it was a way to keep track of him and what he was posting. Loughner had made numerous death threats to various people and the Pima county Sherriff had ignored that and refused to press charges. Was this because Loughner's family had connections? His mother works for the Pima County dept of parks and Recreation. Did Giffords know Loughner was dangerous, but also know that he was being given some kind of legal carte blanche and there was nothing she could do? These are all questions I have asked myself.

Sleeping under the stars is a bit overrated for me. Seems the bugs attack, the critters find you, the wind blows away your body heat, frost and condensation soak your bag, then the rain falls, and no matter what your gear gets filthy. A minimalist tent tarp, bivy, or floor-less tent are some ways to avoid to some of those hassles. But my favorite option is a quality designed and constructed lightweight backpacking tent like the ones profiled in this Nutnfancy series of videos. Here I cover most of the design aspects and experience-based opinions on just such a tent. POUs, Firepower vs Mobility, Impact, Livability concerns, Longevity, Ventilation, Maintenance, Sleeve and Pole Construction, Fabric Choices, Convenience Features, and buying sources are all covered in the series.

It would be unrealistic and probably of limited use for me to review certain models since most are so short lived in the marketplace. Instead I use category representatives and teach the features, construction, sizing, and the many considerations to arm the buyer with the knowledge to make the best purchase choice. Always buy out-of-season whenever possible to save big money; it's very possible to get a ultra-quality BP tent this way for well under $200. Take care of it and it will serve you and your family forever too. Location was the scenic and beautiful Rocky Mountains with Allie the Mountain Dog in tow. This series was lots of work to put together, make happen, and produce but I hope it sheds some light on for some a confusing subject. Get a tent and get out there!
